By February 2, 2023 No Comments
The Equal Suffrage League historic plaque dedication was held Saturday, October 15, 2022. The event took place in the Cuyler Gore Park, in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. The weather was close to 70 degrees and tiny fall leaves came raining down yellow — the suffragists’ color for hope. Attendees were encouraged to wear suffragist colors and many people came adorned in purple, white or yellow. Everyone was given a commemorative button of Dr. Verina Morton-Jones and the button also had streamers with the colors attached.

The program contained greetings from three government offices – the NY State Assembly District 57, the NYC Council District 35 and from the NY Attorney General’s (AG) Office. The AG, Letitia James, made it to the event and gave an inspiring presentation on the importance of history and the vote. (Watch her speech here) The program concluded with a walk across the street to 405 Carlton Avenue, where the unveiling and photo sessions took place.

Organizers partnered with Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church (LAPC) and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Psi Lambda Omega Chapter. Both partners voluntarily supported the media outreach for the dedication ceremony and set up the space used in the Cuyler Gore Park. On the day of the event, the first partner, LAPC, enhanced the ceremony by having one of their choirs provide a musical selection. In addition, the Voter Action Coalition of the church hosted a voter registration table. The second partner, an African American sorority, manned the registration table and provided refreshments.
